A focus on students, research, and service

Building on two centuries of strength
IU has a record of leading innovation and advancing research and partnerships throughout the region that has continued during Whitten’s tenure. IU has expanded its commitment to student success and wellbeing, renewed its commitment to sustainability, and prioritized improving the economy and health of people in Indiana and across the country and world.

Executing an ambitious strategic plan: IU 2030
Launched in 2023, IU 2030 emphasizes three areas of concentration: student success and opportunity, transformative research and creativity, and service to our state and beyond. Detailed, benchmarked seven-year execution plans for each campus outline specific actions to strengthen the foundation from which IU will serve students and the state in the future.

Increasing access to an excellent education
IU is making a world-class education accessible for every student. Reforms to student fees have saved students $14.5 million, and first-year applications to IU Bloomington have risen by more than 50 percent since 2021. Nearly half of bachelor’s degree recipients graduate from IU free of student debt. We’re now implementing innovations in advising, course structure and information systems to help IU students plan and track their path to a degree. IU Indianapolis has launched a seamless admissions pilot program with Indianapolis high schools to reduce paperwork and financial barriers to an education.

Improving university operations for students, faculty, and staff
We’re making organizational and operational improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness. The addition of a chancellor for the Bloomington campus—the first in nearly 20 years—will bring additional leadership to further support and elevate Indiana University’s flagship campus. We’re reforming our budget planning process to ensure we make the best possible use of every dollar available to us. And we’re implementing new, up-to-date software tools to make the admissions process, tracking academic progress, and managing academic records easier for students, faculty, and staff.

Transforming to IU Indianapolis
An innovative realignment plan transformed IUPUI into IU Indianapolis, the state’s next-generation urban research university, winning a coveted R1 rating that places it with IU Bloomington among the nation’s premier research institutions. An outstanding teaching faculty that sends 90 percent of IU Indianapolis graduates to jobs in Indiana and the debut of the IU Launch Accelerator for the Biosciences (IU LAB) position the campus to strengthen the state’s competitiveness for decades to come.

Assembling an exceptional leadership team
IU President Whitten established the university's first Vice President of Student Success position and created the role of Vice President for Regional Campuses and Online Education to ensure IU prioritizes students and provides focused strategic leadership for IU's five regional campuses and online programs.
